Soft Soft Loud: Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Blood on the Floor

    7pm

    Fremantle Arts Centre

1 Finnerty Street, Fremantle, Western Australia 6160

Presented by FAC and Perth International Arts Festival | Festival Exclusive | Thurs 25 Feb | Doors 7pm | Show 8pm | Front Garden | Seated Outdoor Event | Running Time 85 mins | Tickets $45-$49 from Oztix

FAC’s annual program of intriguing cross-genre collaborations, Soft Soft Loud, returns with a 20th anniversary performance of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s (UK) 1996 work Blood on the Floor, uniquely adapted for this occasion.

Considered one of the most gifted composers of his generation, Turnage was inspired to write this piece after losing his brother to a drug overdose. This now-seminal work harnesses a powerful, high-octane meld of jazz and classical elements.

The audience will experience a big sound as more than 25 musicians take to the stage. Jazz soloists unite with a hand-picked ensemble of dynamic WA musicians for this one-off collaboration, tackling Turnage’s complex yet lucid instrumental textures and artful union of notated and improvised material.

Performed under the stars in the beautiful surrounds of FAC's Front Garden, this elegant and deeply moving masterpiece of genuine contemporary sensibilities will be an unforgettable night for music lovers.

    Jazz Soloists:

    Ben Vanderwal – Drums
    Carl Mackey – Saxophones
    Sam Anning – Electric Bass
    Carl Morgan – Electric Guitar
    Matthew Styles – Soprano Saxophone
    Philip Everall – Bass Clarinet
    Andrew Nicholson – Flutes
    Martin Phillipson – Trumpet

    Will Vinson feat. James Muller

    8pm

    Venue 505

    280 Cleveland Street
    Surry Hills NSW 2010

Will Vinson is an astounding musician with a list as long as your arm of achievements in the Jazz word and beyond. The British born, New York resident has performed on many occasions at 505 to packed houses and always featured the equally deadly talent of Australia’s own guitar legend, James Muller.

The rapport between Vinson and Muller is as sublime as the individual virtuosity. Vinson’s compositions bringing out something special between the two. On this occasion the quartet is rounded out by a rhythm team second to none in this country with, until recently New York resident, Sam Anning (bass) and local master Tim Firth (drums)

Originally from London, Alto Saxophonist/Composer Will Vinson moved to New York City in 1999 and has remained there ever since. Since his arrival, he has appeared and recorded with some of the greats of our time, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, Marcus Gilmore, Mark Turner, Chris Potter,

Vinson’s playing is executed with incredible power and dramatic sensitivity, and is characterised by his imposing sound and technique; influenced by saxophonists from Cannonball Adderley to Chris Potter, he nevertheless brings his own unique approach to every performance. Will's writing, and the playing of his colleagues, combines a great respect for the century-long jazz tradition with explorations into the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic realms of contemporary forms.

In 2012, along with bassist Orlando le Fleming and guitarist Lage Lund, he formed the critically acclaimed OWL Trio, whose eponymous debut in 2013 was hailed by critics and listeners alike.

Everything about this album, which should contend for debut of the year honours, is a resounding success. The music swings effortlessly, every utterance is gorgeous and the recording is intimate and beautiful. – DownBeat
the chemistry, sensitivity and simpatico sensibilities exhibited by these three young men are evident at every turn....OWL Trio is one of those records that finds power in quiet expression, not raised volume or aggression. Lund, Vinson and le Fleming make for an absorbing combination. – All About Jazz

Will has released 5 CD’s as a leader/composer and musical experience has not been limited to Jazz. Will is a member of Rufus Wainwright’s band and also performed, arranged and/ or recorded with Sufjan Stevens, Sean Lennon, Martha Wainwright, Beth Orton and Harper Simon.

    Jonathon Crayford Trio

    8:30pm

    Bennetts Lane Jazz Club

    25 Bennetts Lane Melbourne

Jonathan Crayford is one of New Zealand's most exciting pianists - with lots of musical insights to share with us. This prolific composer, performer and pianist spent years honing his craft in New York, before returning to NZ in the naughties to rock the scene. Crayford has also lived in Paris and Spain, writing a film/opera and recording two albums of solo piano music in Spain and a trio album in New York.

Acclaimed as a highly original compositional talent, pianist Jonathan Crayford has been responsible for many film soundtracks, albums, and bands. As a sideman he has worked with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Binney, David Murray, Groove Collective, Amp Fiddler, Questlove, Mambo Macoco, Bruno Lawrence and many others.

'This is the kind of piano I totally relate to: exploratory, thoughtful, soulful, focused. Those qualities are all sort of contradictory, or at least contrasting, which is why this kind of work is meaningful: because it is multi-dimensional.' - Thomas Conrad critic for Jazz Times.

Join us tonight as he brings Sam Anning (bass) and Leigh Fischer (drums) to share the stage with him.

Join Jake for a night of swinging tunes, paying homage to the Adderley Brothers, Lee Morgan, Billy Strayhorn and many others, with special guest, Ben Bruni on Trumpet.

Tours and Performances with mentor, John Morrison’s groups, as well as with George Golla, James Morrison, Judy Bailey, Darren Percival, Liam Burrows and his own groups, Jake was soon in high demand. This also saw the opportunity to perform with international artists including Jeff Clayton, Wycliffe Gordon, Marian Petrescu, Gordon Goodwin, Aaron Goldberg, Gregory Hutchinson, Bob Mintzer and Mike Stern. Carl Morgan: Southern Sky

    8:30pm

    Bennetts Lane Jazz Club

    25 Bennetts Lane Melbourne

Sydney Guitarist Carl Morgan was the winner of the National Jazz Awards in 2014. For this performance he has formed a new ensemble to perform material exploring the sonic interplay of two electric guitars, often separately looped and layered, as a foundation which intricate compositions are built around. The band will explore both heavily improvised instrumental material, as well as some recently written songs influenced by electronic music and ambient rock as much as jazz.

The gig will see many of Carl's computer based compositions bought to life for the first time by a live band. Expect a highly experimental and electrified concert as these highly regarded young musicians converge from all three corners of Australia to play some music that will draw inspiration from a wide range of influences including Radiohead, Brian Wilson, The Punch Brothers and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

His name is synonymous with power and grace on the tenor saxophone, his playing characterised by impassioned ballad performances and ferocious displays of technical ability. Widely regarded as one of the jazz greats, he will be forever revered for his distinctive sound and powers of invention.

It has been 15 years since Joe Henderson died and his music remains as relevant as it ever did. He managed to achieve what many strive for but few attain, a voice that transcended genres and eras. Joe’s playing was and will forever remain eternally cool.

Tonight this quintet of some of Australia’s finest comes together to celebrate Henderson’s music.

The repertoire, will be hard hitting and beautiful.

HOWL with DARRIN ARCHER and MAXINE BENEBA CLARKE

    6:30pm

    Toff In Town

Hallucinatory, chaotic and confronting, Allen Ginsberg's 1955 poem Howl sits with On the Road by Jack Kerouac and Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs at the very centre of the Beat literary canon.

With its wild, visceral depictions of sex, drugs and madness, Ginsberg's poem is perhaps as famous for the obscenity trial that followed its publication as for its disturbing and much-parodied opening lines. Like the other Beat writers, Ginsberg was influenced by jazz music and aimed to capture in his writing something of the rhythms, spontaneity and subversive undercurrents inherent in jazz traditions.

At two very special performances at the Toff, Maxine Beneba Clarke will read Howl to modern music by jazz composer Darrin Archer. Archer's composition, calledDrunken Taxicabs of Absolute Reality: Howl to Music, features a seven-piece jazz band and aims to create a sonic landscape that accompanies and interacts with Ginsberg's seminal poem.

Ginsberg himself described Howl as a 'tragic custard-pie of wild phrasing'. Join Beneba Clarke, Archer and band as they bring that wild phrasing to life, more than 60 years after Ginsberg's first reading.
