Diego’s unique interpretations, along with his phenomenal technique and emotion, has created an explosion of adoring fans and concert goers. Diego has performed in over forty countries around the world.

Diego Figueiredo was born in Franca, Brazil in 1980. At the age of four he used to strike poses carrying his small guitar. At six, he received a mandolin, which was kept in a very special place in his house. Diego played many instruments before choosing the electric guitar when he was twelve. By the age of fifteen, he was playing theaters and nightclubs throughout Brazil, playing both solo and with many renowned Brazilian musicians. For a number of years he played in several different groups including Banda Gênese and Squema Seis from Brasília.

He has studied classical guitar, Brazilian popular music and jazz in several different conservatories including Franca, Ribeirão Preto, and Tatuí. Most recently he accompanies the singer and songwriter Belchior in tours around Brazil and abroad, as well as with the French phenom Cyrille Aimée. He has played and shared the stage with Hermeto Pascoal, Larry Coryell, Geraldo Azevedo, Sebastião Tapajós, Demônios da Garoa, Vanusa, Renato Borghetti, Osvaldo Montenegro, Jair Rodrigues, Elomar, Toquinho, Tunai, Paulinho da Viola, Nando Cordel, Moraes Moreira, Fafá de Belém, Amelinha, Los Hermanos, Zeca Baleiro, Miyazawa and others.

Besides being a guitar player, Diego is a producer, arranger, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist and has recently produced and arranged the double album “As várias caras de Drummond” for which Belchior wrote the music for Drummond´s poems, and which was released in CARAS magazine. With a variety of works already released, Diego is doing shows on the most important stages around the world enchanting and charming the public wherever he goes with his unique touch.

“One of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen in my whole life” – George Benson

“Diego is a unique musician” – Al Di Meola

“Dear Diego: I listened to your CD “Segundas Intenções” and it was a magical moment. When I go to Brazil I would like to play together with you” – Pat Metheny

Cyrille Aimee - Atlanta Jazz Festival

    5:30pm

    Atlanta Jazz Festival 'International Stage'

    Cyrille Aimee (voice)
    Michael Valeanu (guitar)
    Koran Agan (guitar)
    Sam Anning (bass)

Sunday, May 25, International Stage 5:30 PM |

Winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s International Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, French/Dominican vocalist Cyrille Aimée is, in the words of Will Friedwald of The Wall Street Journal—”one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation.” In the same Wall Street Journal feature on Cyrille (and vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant), Friedwald declared “Both are astonishing creative singers, with a brilliant sound, fresh ideas, impeccable rhythm and an overall approach that honors tradition without being shackled to the past.”

Cyrille was born in Fontainebleau, France, to a French father and Dominican mother. Her introduction to jazz was the result of the fortuitous location of her upbringing, the village Samois-sur-Seine—the same place where the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt once lived. For decades gypsies from throughout Europe have descended upon Samois every June, setting up caravans in nearby meadows for the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. Many years ago, a young, curious Cyrille wandered (unbeknownst to her parents) into the encampments and fell in love with the gypsies’ music and way of life. She would climb out her bedroom window at night and spend evenings in their quarters, learned their language and sang by the fire with Django’s descendants—before returning home prior to sunrise and school. “I was hypnotized by this music which made me want to tap my feet,” said Cyrille. “Swinging music makes me so happy.”

As a teenager, Cyrille performed in various Parisian cafés and clubs. When her family moved to Singapore, she remained in Paris to attend the American School of Modern Music. She also auditioned for “Star Academy,” the French version of “American Idol.” Selected to be one of 16 semi-finalists, Cyrille had second thoughts when she was handed a contract that tied her up every which way for ten years—including what she would sing. This was too much for her gypsy and jazz spirit to accept—so she quit. The French media so pursued Cyrille, she sought refuge in her mother’s homeland—the Dominican Republic.

Desperate to hear and learn from other jazz musicians, she opted to attend SUNY Purchase given its proximity to New York City. Cyrille discovered campus life as a freshman and Manhattan as a sophomore—and a further flowering of influences.

In 2006, Cyrille organized a backpacking tour of Europe where she and her musician friends played and sang on street corners across the Continent. In 2007, the group targeted jazz festivals where they played for food and lodging. Cyrille left the Perugia Jazz Festival for Switzerland where she participated in the Montreux International Voice Competition—which she won, a prize which included the financing of a full-length recording. And so In 2008, Cyrille and her friends returned to Switzerland to record her first CD, “Cyrille Aimée & The Surreal Band.” Months later there was another surreal experience: filling-in for their ailing lead vocalist, Cyrille performed on a major European tour with the French supergroup Caravan Palace.

In recent years Cyrille has toured in many different contexts and has created several self-produced recordings, including with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo, with whom she has extensively toured in a duo setting. She won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2012, the same year she released her 5th self-produced CD, “Live at Birdland”. Cyrille’s first major label release, “It’s a Good Day,” will be out in Spring 2014. Featuring originals as well as enchanting covers of classics, the configuration of the band is tailored to Cyrille’s musical vision: bass, drums and three guitars: gypsy, jazz and Brazilian.

Cyrille Aimée’s hybrid of influences has resulted in a sound that’s fresh and enlivening. In addition, her distinctive voice—which did not escape the attentions of Stephen Sondheim, who cast Cyrille in an Encores! Special Event at New York City’s City Center in November 2013—is guaranteed to enthrall.
