Mat Jodrell – trumpet Carl Mackay – alto saxophone Grant Windsor – piano Sam Anning – contrabass Daniel Susnjar – drums & cymbals

Dynamic long-running Perth group Speedball  was a jewel in the Perth jazz scene after it’s inception in 2000, until its members were scattered across the globe (two studying in the USA, one based in London, and others relocating to Melbourne and New York). Formed after an inspiring tour of New Orleans and New York City, Carl Mackey (saxophone) and Mat Jodrell (trumpet) sought to form a super band that would conjure a similar energy to that which they’d experienced in their travels overseas. After one fateful ‘session’ the group came out blazing, snapping up awards and winning audiences and critics over with their high-energy performances at festivals and clubs. The combined accolades of the members are extensive and impressive, including: James Morrison Scholarship recipients, Clifford Brown/Stan Getz fellow, Bell awards, WAMI awards, ARIA nominations, National Jazz awards, and MCA Freedman Fellowship finalists. Speedball members have also been on the faculty at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, University of Miami, and the James Morriso

    Sam Anning's 'DataMeta'

    8pm

    The Brunswick Green

313 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056

Sam Anning’s “DataMeta” with Gian Slater, Barney McAll and Leigh Fisher.

2015 National Jazz award winner Sam Anning is a ubiquitous part

of Melbourne jazz scene. After five years in New York City he has

returned to Melbourne where he leads a variety of ensembles

including The Sam Anning Sextet, The Stretchropolitans, and

this exciting new analog electronics-focused group, DataMeta.

Tonight’s incarnation features 2016 Jazz ARIA winner Barney

McAll (keyboards & electronics), 2015 PBS Young Elder recipient

Gian Slater (voice & electronics) and Leigh Fischer (drums &

electronics). In this more open and experimental project, they will

be “navigating deep sonic subterrain to unearth rare terrestrials

and clamber through shifting mercurial structures”.
